Staying Healthy During Cold & Flu Season: What Women Should Know

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, sniffles and coughs seem to be everywhere — welcome to cold and flu season! This time of year can be particularly challenging, especially for women juggling busy schedules and multiple responsibilities. It’s essential to take steps to protect yourself from colds and the flu, especially if your immune system is weakened, such as during pregnancy or due to a chronic illness.

Cold and Flu Season and Women’s Health

While cold and flu season affects everyone, women can face unique challenges due to hormonal fluctuations. For example, lower estrogen levels during menopause can weaken the immune response. Additionally, pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, as pregnancy places significant strain on the body, increasing the likelihood of severe flu outcomes, such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and the need for intensive care.

Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention

It’s not always possible to prevent illness, but women can take proactive steps to reduce their risk by:

  • Frequently washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using hand sanitizer.
  • Avoiding face touching.
  • Disinfecting high-touch areas like doorknobs, counters, and phones.
  • Eating nutrient-rich foods and prioritizing sleep to build immunity naturally.
  • Getting an annual flu shot.

Flu shots are especially important for pregnant women.Research indicates that receiving a flu shot during pregnancy decreases the risk of hospitalization due to the flu by an average of 40%. Furthermore, flu vaccines can protect babies during their first several months of life, a time when they're too young to be vaccinated themselves.

When to See an OB/GYN or Urgent Care

If you're experiencing worsening general flu symptoms, such as high fever, difficulty breathing, or dehydration, or if your symptoms aren't improving after a week, you should consult a physician at your local Urgent Care. However, if you’re pregnant, it’s crucial to contact your OB/GYN (using their urgent line) for issues like a fever over 101°F, vaginal bleeding or discharge, cramping, or decreased fetal movement. If you're unsure about your symptoms, it's always best to consult your OB/GYN for medical advice to ensure both your health and that of your baby.
